Irish Aerial Dance Festival

Based in Letterkenny and now in its 5th year, the Irish Aerial Dance Festival is a joint initiative of Fidget Feet Aerial Dance Company, An Grianán Theatre and Donegal County Council Arts Service. The Festival features a wide ranging and intensive programme of specialized aerial dance classes in, for example, warm up and warm down techniques, injury prevention, trapeze and fabric technique, harness and counter-weight work, vertical dance and harness wall-running, aerial rope and cuckoon techniques. The Festival also includes taster sessions and a programme for beginners as well as solo and showcase performances by dance teachers and by participating students. Under the curation of Fidget Feet artistic director Chantal McCormick ( Ballybofey ), the sessions are facilitated by a team of internationally recognised professional practitioners and teachers from Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada, New Zealand and the US. For the 2013 event, 10 expert tutors delivered 200 individual classes to 90 participants over 16 days. Festival venues include An Grianán Theatre, The Aura Leisure Centre, Letterkenny Community Centre and The Regional Cultural Centre.

This year’s event runs from June 7-22 and will be followed by the Circonnection Aerial Street Arts Creation Week, an EU Leonardo-funded residential training and creative programme geared towards the creation of outdoor and site-specific aerial work. The programme is presented by the Circonnection network of performance companies from Ireland, UK, Spain, France and Hungary, in association with the Irish Aerial Dance Festival.
